Places that change us

This map shows in which places in the world certain planetary lines would be particularly strong – provided that someone was born at that exact time and place.
Astrocartography tries to make visible which regions can particularly favor creativity, encounters, changes or personal development.

Photography, Places and Inspiration – Why Some Places Change Our Perception

Is there a place in the world that has changed your view of life?

Sometimes I wonder why certain places change our perception more than others. As a photographer, I've seen time and again that landscapes, cities, or even individual spaces do something to us. Suddenly, you see more clearly, thoughts rearrange, ideas emerge.

A place is then no longer just a background – it becomes a moment of knowledge.

A lot of my photographic work is born out of these experiences, not from a plan, but from the feeling that a place has a special intensity: light, atmosphere and time combine to form a moment that later becomes an image.

Some time ago, I came across a perspective that describes this experience in an interesting way: Astrocartography.

This is a method from astrological cartography that tries to make visible which places in the world could specifically activate certain areas of life. Put simply, it transfers one's own birth constellation to a world map. Lines show places where certain planetary influences are supposed to have a particularly strong effect.

Believe it or not, the idea behind it fascinated me.

Because it touches on a question that has occupied me as a photographer for a long time:
Why do some places immediately feel meaningful while others hardly touch us?

Maybe it's because of memories.
Perhaps in the history of a place.
Perhaps in light, landscape or cultural atmosphere.

Or maybe because places actually have their own impact on our thinking and our creativity.

When I look back on my travels, I realize over and over again that certain images could only be created in these very places, not because I planned them, but because the place itself triggered something.

Some of these places don't just leave memories -- they later become pictures.

A good example of this is my work from India, where I saw places develop a special intensity through rituals, architecture and centuries-old traditions, and people have come there for generations with their hopes, questions and prayers, and this atmosphere also shapes the images that are created there.

At such moments, photography becomes more than just a documentary for me.

Real photographic art – what collectors pay attention to.
It becomes an attempt to make the presence of a place visible.

Astrocartography provides an exciting mental perspective for this. It opens up the possibility that our relationship with places is not random – but perhaps part of a larger context.

Whether one understands this idea symbolically or actually believes in it, plays almost no role.

The real knowledge remains the same:

Places are not just backdrops of our lives.
They influence our perceptions, our encounters and sometimes even our way of life.

And perhaps this is one of the reasons why people travel – and why artists are always looking for new places.

When places become pictures

Many of my photographs come from these very encounters with places, not as travel pictures in the classical sense, but as an attempt to make the atmosphere of a place visible – the silence of a forest, the energy of a city or the special mood of a landscape space.

If you want to see how such places appear in my work, you can take a look at my Viewing Room, where you will find a selection of my current editions.
