RGB MEGAPIXEL (copy)
Written by André Wagner
The NFT RGB Megapixels is a 2-minute video loop, a metaphor about the insignificance or meaning of the individual in today's world. The question of what might happen if a block of RGB pixels can free itself from the camera and escape back into space. Three anonymous pixels do just that, but moments later the birds start singing again as if nothing happened. Surreal...
The work is a reflection of the considerations that normally take place only in the thoughts of the artist himself. As vast megapixels of the primary colors, they fall back from their RGB space into the original, natural space, the image of which they were supposed to shape in photography. But their meaning, their impact in the real space, is much more powerful than their anonymous absence in the finished shot. Or maybe not?
André Wagner takes the viewer into his secret thought-world. As a photographer, he stands in an analogue space, as here in a fascinating landscape of Scotland. With the help of millions upon millions of red-green-blue pixels of a high-resolution digital camera, the sensor captures magical moments of this world, which is really familiar to us, for eternity.
And even if he doesn't artificially edit or falsify his color photographs, his everyday life is still mainly in the digital world. Sitting at the computer all day, he thinks in his RGB color space, a world of red, green and blue pixels that make up every screen image and thus a large part of all of our modern reality.
In photography, the quality of a digital photo and thus the reproduction of our surrounding reality, megapixels are a fixed term (the number of pixels that make up an image, measured in millions), but what happens when these anonymous building blocks of virtual reality flee?
What's the impact? And yes, Wagner actually erased one pixel in the data from this shot, but this missing pixel is almost impossible to locate among millions of others due to the practical insignificance of the "individual."
