André Wagner (born 1980 in Burgstädt, Germany) is a German photographic artist whose work explores the limits of human perception through long exposures, infrared photography and light at night. His images reveal phenomena that remain hidden to the human eye and investigate how time, memory and movement become inscribed in a photographic image.

TIME AND MOVEMENT

Wagner’s earliest visual experiences came through graffiti in urban space. He trained as a photographer from 1999 to 2001 and has worked as an independent photographic artist since 2002.

From the beginning, his practice has centred on the question of how movement and time can become visible within a still image. Long exposure developed into one of his primary artistic means of expression.

Traces of light, movement and transformation condense into photographs that reach beyond a single moment. In Wagner’s work, photography does not merely stop time. It reveals how time leaves its mark on a place.

TRAVEL AND THE INVISIBLE SPECTRUM

Many of Wagner’s series evolve over years of travel. India, which he has visited and photographed extensively, holds particular significance within his practice.

Pilgrimage sites, religious festivals and everyday encounters do not appear as exotic scenery. They become spaces of lived memory and spiritual experience.

Since 2021, Wagner has increasingly worked with a camera specially converted to record the infrared spectrum. This technique expands the visible world into wavelengths of light that cannot be perceived by the human eye.

Landscapes, architecture and vegetation consequently take on an unfamiliar presence, moving between documentary reality, memory and inner image.

ART IN ARCHITECTURE AND THE DIGITAL AGE

Wagner’s work has been presented in museums, galleries and international exhibitions, including the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle and the Albertinum in Dresden. His photographs are held in public and private collections. He has been a member of the German Photographic Society (DGPh) since 2020.

Alongside strictly limited photographic editions, Wagner creates large-scale art-in-architecture projects. These works are developed in dialogue with architecture, light and movement through space.

The photograph is not merely placed within a building. It becomes part of its atmosphere, perception and identity.

Wagner also works with digital editions, NFTs and blockchain-based certificates. His focus is not the technology itself, but the question of how provenance, scarcity and ownership history can be documented transparently.
