Authentic Nature
Atmospheric birch forest 2, Finnland
A closer look at the work
The square image brings together pale birch trunks at varying intervals. Dark patches and cracks mark their white bark; slender branches cross the predominantly vertical lines. Warm sunlight falls through the trunks onto the green undergrowth. Broad trunks close to the viewer and narrower forms in the background give the woodland depth, while trees cut by the edges suggest its continuation beyond the frame.
The upward lines of the trunks and the light behind them lead the eye in two directions: upwards and in between the trees. Within the square frame, these movements remain in an open balance. No unobstructed path reveals the entire space; depth emerges through many small openings. How does a familiar woodland change when we see it both as a spatial arrangement and as a rhythm of light and dark surfaces?
