Bamboo in the Rain 3, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
Tall green bamboo forms a dense wall above a pale tangle of dry-looking twigs and leaves. Strong glossy stems stand on the right; thinner lines recede into shade on the left. Pale nodes add short horizontal accents. Regular ascent meets a ground-level accumulation without consistent direction.
These orders are not opposed. The low tangle belongs to the same setting as the upright stems, allowing different states of plant material to coexist. The eye moves from clear contours into intricate disorder and back. A seemingly simple linear subject gains complexity through its less uniform ground.
