Authentic Nature
Sacred light, Finnland
2008
A closer look at the work
A pale birch trunk stands immediately before the viewer. Dark bark patches articulate its vertical surface, while sunlight passes through slender trees and a pale veil behind it. Broad shafts run diagonally towards the green ground cover. Fine upper branches draw a delicate network into the brightness rather than stopping it.
The foreground trunk offers a firm surface against the dissolving background. Proximity is readable in its bark; distance emerges through weakening contrasts. The title “Sacred light” allows a sense of exception without requiring a particular religious interpretation. The effect arises from a visible relationship: directed light briefly reorganises an ordinary woodland and makes its forms more intensely perceptible.
