A closer look at the work
A large bare tree shines white against an almost black background. Dense branches form a wide, finely drawn crown. A smaller green plant stands on the right, distinctly separated by colour. Rocks and dry grasses connect both forms to the same stony ground.
Birth and Death names a contrast made visible through size, colour and branching. The bare tree has a powerful presence while green growth remains small at the edge. Ending and continuation are not simply ranked in importance. The photograph shows how a remaining body can continue to shape a place even when its appearance points towards another state of life.
