Black hole 1
2008
A closer look at the work
A white-clad upper body appears low within a large black field. A red-and-white patterned head covering and dark band mark the head, but the face remains entirely black. Pale clothing ends at the lower edge. The visible rectangular frame reinforces a precisely bounded stage for these few forms.
Black Hole 1 makes omission the centre of a portrait. Clothing offers clues to a person while the face, a usual site of recognition, is withheld. The work raises the limits of visual attribution. What can outward signs reveal without individual features? The black absence keeps that expectation open rather than supplying an invented identity.
