Water
Burned Forest 4
2018
A closer look at the work
A strong dark trunk stands right of centre before many thinner trees. Ground furrows, remnants and irregular bright patches recede into brown half-light. The crop establishes a substantial foreground: uneven terrain is encountered before the repeated rise of trunks.
This weighting anchors the eye close to the ground. Forest structure becomes not simply countable but imaginable as difficult terrain. The title invites a reading of damage without the photograph establishing cause or judgement. It remains with surfaces and distances. Small light patches prevent darkness from closing completely, revealing differences within an apparently uniform condition.
