Japan
Cityscape tokyo 2, Japan
A closer look at the work
Colourful drawn figures and vertical lettering fill the narrow frame from edge to edge. A large illustrated image occupies the left, while white, red and yellow signs crowd the right. Only fragments of the buildings remain visible beneath this second surface of pictures.
The photograph approaches the city as an existing collage. Each sign claims a field, yet together they form a visual rhythm. Rather than decoding one message, the viewer encounters many at once. Reading and looking become competing ways of navigating the same surface.
