Romance of Elements
Dimension door, Indien
2004
A closer look at the work
A narrow pale walkway leads from the centre towards a golden circle of light. Pavilions and domes extend along the water behind it, almost uninterrupted in their reflection. The walkway alone cuts through the dark smooth surface, giving the otherwise horizontal view a strong forward direction.
At Kusum Sarovar, the circle provides an additional centre within existing architecture. Its repeated lines of light have no solid wall yet suggest an opening. Dimension Door connects this contradiction with the idea of passage. A precise tension remains between a walkable route, reflected space and a luminous form whose spatial status is not immediately clear.
