The Infrared Journey
DUBAI BLING, Vereinigte Arabische Emirate
2023
A closer look at the work
Three people stand with their backs to the viewer before a tall glazed façade. Their long garments glow red, while the central figure’s head covering appears pale. Beyond them lie turquoise water and densely layered buildings. Diagonal supports draw a diamond pattern across the view and continue as shadows on the floor. The person in the middle holds a phone in front of them. Folds of fabric, architecture and light form different kinds of line within the same image.
Dubai Bling directs attention both to a city view and to the people looking at it. The infrared colours separate the red figures sharply from the cool exterior, while the window grid connects the two spaces. Looking itself becomes a subject: we encounter a view through the presence of other viewers. What serves as the foreground, and what constitutes the scene itself? The photograph leaves that emphasis open, sustaining a tension between a personal moment and a geometrically ordered space.
