Authentic Nature
Fight, Neuseeland
2006
A closer look at the work
A straight trunk rises on the left while a neighbouring tree extends almost horizontally to the right. Dark foliage forms a low continuous mass above a mesh of pale branches. Green ground and fallen twigs lie between the trunks. An opening on the right reveals more landscape and sky.
Fight draws tension from the unequal distribution of height and width. The upright trunk is firmly anchored within the crop, while the curved crown seems to seek the lateral edge. Both belong to the same setting. The image can suggest resistance without assigning human will to growth: form becomes a trace of the relationship between a tree’s body and its space.
