Authentic Nature
Forest and light, Deutschland
2006
A closer look at the work
A dark trunk stands on the right before a field of fine bright points. Foreground grasses partly dissolve into rounded highlights, with slender trees still visible behind. Long shadows run diagonally over the ground. Uneven sharpness makes the forest alternate between tangible forms and almost flat sparkle.
Forest and Light concerns a way of seeing as much as a place. The eye seeks contours but encounters many small interruptions in the illuminated grass. The trunk provides a fixed reference while light makes its surroundings appear less stable. A recognisable landscape becomes a sequence of brightness and intervals through remarkably small visual shifts.
