Romance of Elements
Harwood hole 1, Neuseeland
2006
Artwork text and archival details
Adapted from the artist’s archive.
Wet rocks and moss surround a concentrated glow in the forest near Harwood Hole, New Zealand. Warm light opens a passage through the cool, dark vegetation. The stones seem gathered around it, their weight contrasting with a brightness that cannot be held in place.
The photograph explores the relationship between obstruction and emergence. Light finds a way through the arrangement of rock and shadow, giving the scene a depth that is both spatial and suggestive. Its mystery lies in the encounter between tangible surfaces and an illumination whose presence changes how those surfaces are seen.
