Iceland
Jökulsárlòn glacier lagoon 1, Island
2014
A closer look at the work
A large blue iceberg rises above the water on the right. Angular planes and fissures meet an overcast grey sky. Smaller pieces lie to the left and behind. Broad soft curves cross the foreground water, mixing brown, grey and turquoise and altering the ice’s sharp shape in reflection.
The Jökulsárlón view joins two appearances of the same material: fractured solid ice and moving water. Their visible properties differ even as reflection connects them. A low viewpoint makes the nearby block appear large while denying it firm ground. The photograph holds a provisional arrangement of floating bodies whose surroundings continue to act along every edge.
