Time Flies
Lift and skyline, Japan
A closer look at the work
People in a glass lift overlap with the lights of the city. Heads and shoulders form a loose group in the upper area, while bright vertical reflections pass through the bodies below. Dark frames and metallic edges remain as spatial markers. Gold, brown and grey connect interior and exterior, whose boundaries become difficult to separate.
The glazing permits a view while also returning images. The people consequently occupy both the lift and the visible surface of the city. Their bodies remain recognisable, but their occupations and individual activities do not. The photograph can be read as an examination of urban proximity: several people share a small moving space while their relationships remain inaccessible to the viewer.
