Water
Matsumoto Castle 2
2016
A closer look at the work
A multilevel building with projecting roofs rises on a high stone base. Pale edges articulate dark storeys, leading upward in stages. Nearly black water occupies much of the vertical frame below. Deep blue sky clarifies the silhouette while reflection remains faint.
Architectural definition meets an optically open foreground. Each roof establishes a boundary; water withholds such divisions. The building seems close in detail yet held away by darkness. The eye crosses that distance before following its stepped ascent. Night turns architecture into luminous contours above a space difficult to measure.
