Matsumoto castle, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
A multistorey castle with prominent white roof edges stands on the left. Pale trees extend to the right above a dark stone boundary. Violet night sky provides a quiet field overhead. Water remains faint at the lower edge, while the wide crop joins architecture and vegetation into one waterside view.
Matsumoto Castle relates stepped roofs to irregular crowns. Both rise above the same dark base but repeat forms differently. The panorama lets attention move from the named monument into its surroundings. The castle becomes part of a wider spatial arrangement shaped by lighting, distance and the distribution of bright outlines.
