A closer look at the work
A bright quay edge runs steeply along the left of the narrow frame. Dark blue water opens on the right beneath an equally deep sky. Buildings and small lights gather in a thin middle zone. Their reflections extend downward, joining the distant city to the quiet foreground surface.
Extreme narrowness removes the river's customary lateral breadth. A vertical slice of sky, horizon and depth replaces panorama. The nearby edge provides support while dark water remains hard to bound. The eye moves between a fixed line and distant lights, experiencing landscape as a concentrated relation between one position and a slender distance.
