Mix Bamboo Forest, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
Thick pale-grey bamboo stems crowd the frame. Dark nodes divide their vertical surfaces into sections. Rougher, twisting trunks and slender branches intervene; small openings reveal light and deeper green. The forest becomes a dense succession of lines that are neither fully parallel nor evenly spaced.
Deviation animates the order. Curving trunks interrupt straight stems, light varies and proximity obscures depth. No single passage controls the eye. Rather than universal symbolism, the photograph offers a specific relation between repetition and difference. Growth becomes perceptible through neighbouring forms, without needing to be translated into a rule for living.
