OKU NO IN Twillight 4, JAPAN
2016
A closer look at the work
Stone gates, small steps and closely spaced monuments stand beneath tall trees. A thick trunk rises near the centre while dark greenery closes the background. On the right, a figure carries a red fabric accent within the muted colours. The wide format connects many elements without removing their spatial layering.
This Oku-no-in view calls for slow reading of differences. Constructed thresholds alternate with growing trunks, and paths remain only partly visible. Memorial objects and vegetation form a shared setting. Individual stones retain distinctive shapes within close proximity. Intimacy emerges through neighbouring details rather than a free, completely surveyable view.
