A closer look at the work
Golden figures stand close behind one another, filling the image to its edges. Faces, hands and fine radiating structures create a layered network. A foreground figure is more prominent, while similar forms continue into darkness. Light reaches certain surfaces and allows others to recede almost completely.
This Sanjūsangen-dō view centres on the relationship between individual figure and multitude. Repetition creates a shared rhythm while changing brightness reveals further details. No empty area lets the eye disengage from the forms. Instead of complete overview, a continuing comparison emerges: similarity connects the figures without erasing their positions or particular visible features.
