Water
Sex On The Beach II
2013
A closer look at the work
A solitary palm rises above dark rocks on a narrow coast. Blue water lies behind it beneath an extensive sky. The steep vertical frame stacks stone, plant, sea and air rather than following the shoreline. Fanned leaves interrupt this calm sequence with an outward-reaching movement.
The title raises expectations that the visible subject does not clearly confirm. The photograph first offers an unoccupied fragment, leaving the gap between name and view unresolved. Isolation gives the palm a bodily presence while keeping it tied to rock and water. A tight crop produces proximity to an edge, with openness continuing above in the sky.
