Japan
Skyline tokyo, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
Tall, densely windowed buildings stand across the water. Yellow and white lights extend into long vertical reflections. A pale bridge on the right introduces a diagonal against the towers. The sky remains dark and quiet while the lower half becomes a sequence of neighbouring bands of light.
Tokyo’s skyline appears twice but in two different orders. Fixed façades divide light into small units above; water joins it into flowing strips below. The photograph draws attention to the conditions of a city image. Architecture becomes visible through its mass and through a moving surface that receives and transforms its illumination.
