Iceland
Swimming against the stream, Island
2014
Artwork text and archival details
Adapted from the artist’s archive.
Flowing water moves around rough rocks beneath Iceland’s green hills. Mist and light soften the distance, while the stones hold their sharply defined presence against the movement. The photograph brings two different measures of time into relation: the passing current and the apparent permanence of rock.
The title introduces the idea of resistance. It can be read in the encounter between water and stone, but also as a question about persistence in a changing world. Neither element cancels the other; the image finds its tension in their continuing coexistence.
