The imperial trees, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
Two tall, loosely branching trees frame a smaller, denser tree at the centre. Night lighting turns outer leaves and branches golden, while the central crown stays dark green. Violet sky opens behind them. Some blurred foliage softens the contours, and stone surfaces along the bottom border the living forms.
The composition distributes weight and air unevenly. The outer crowns expose much of the background, while the compact centre holds attention. A tension emerges between expansion and concentration. “The imperial trees” supplies a resonant title, but the contrast between the growth patterns already carries the visual effect. Light and darkness articulate their differences without separating them entirely.
