Romance of Elements
To play with fire, Neuseeland
2006
A closer look at the work
A small rock supporting a tree stands near the shore. An orange area glows within it, sharply contrasting with dark stone. The crown forms a silhouette against blue clouded sky. Calm water surrounds the formation, while stony foreground connects the viewpoint to the island-like shape.
To Play with Fire concentrates different spatial conditions within a small area. A trunk grows from solid form, water surrounds it, and light seems to open it from within. The visible surroundings do not fully explain this bright intervention. The rock remains both object and stage, its familiar mass acquiring another appearance through colour and brightness.
