Iceland
Unreal midnightsun in the mountains 1, Island
A closer look at the work
Dark slopes and green hollows extend through a long panorama. A low pale bank of cloud hides sections of the peaks. Light reaches isolated surfaces while neighbouring areas remain in shadow. A dark strip along the bottom anchors the scene and deepens its layering.
The mountains take shape through concealment as much as visibility. Where clouds erase contours, the eye completes the landscape. The title's suggestion of unreality can be connected to this shifting appearance: tangible terrain temporarily becomes an arrangement of coloured fields and illuminated zones.
