White Bamboo 2, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
A dark, brown-speckled stem stands close before almost white bamboo. A loosening sheath forms a curved edge across the stems' vertical direction; small side points interrupt smoothness. Very pale neighbours recede, emphasising the irregular central surface.
Dark detail carries the most readable information while brightness creates distance, partly reversing familiar visual hierarchy. Attention catches on speckles, edges and a thin projecting layer. Change appears as difference between neighbouring surfaces rather than a dramatic event. The foreground's delicate material detail makes a forest perceptible through one limited section.
