White Bamboo 3, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
A nearby bamboo stem changes from glossy green below to a brown-speckled sheath above. A pale ring marks the boundary. Behind it, almost white stems stand close, divided by narrow light gaps. Cropping carries the foreground form beyond the frame, making one transition the centre.
A small material difference becomes large enough to study as a landscape of surface. Smoothness, mottling and projecting edges can be compared. Pale surroundings suppress competing details. Rather than explaining a whole forest, the view reveals variation within one stem. Proximity allows a boundary to be seen that would disappear from farther away.
