White Bamboo 4, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
A dark mottled bamboo stem stands among very pale neighbours. A broad light form tilts slightly on the left, shifting the vertical order. The central sheath has irregular edges; surrounding stems are smoother and divided by fine rings. Tight cropping concentrates on neighbouring surfaces.
Paleness removes the forest's expected enclosure. Near-white bodies and narrow intervals replace a green spatial field. The dark detail anchors comparisons of texture and direction. One divergent section can organise a repeated pattern without dissolving its continuity.
