White Bamboo 5, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
Two strong pale bamboo stems stand close in a narrow vertical frame. One is nearly upright, the other tilts across finer background lines. Grey-brown rings divide smooth surfaces into long sections. Restrained colour exposes small differences in light, mottling and spacing.
Depth emerges from few means: overlap and inclination distinguish nearby bodies from a finer background. Stems are neither mere lines nor isolated objects. Width gives them weight, brightness lends lightness. Looking moves between material presence and the almost drawn order of slender intervals.
