A closer look at the work
Seen from the side, the peacock’s open fan loses its familiar symmetry. Long feathers rise steeply on the left and curve towards the small body on the right. Pale shafts stand out against darker surfaces, with dense pink foliage behind. The turquoise ground provides a quiet lower boundary for the expansive figure.
This view makes the relationship between surface and volume unusually clear. What appears frontally as an ornamental disc acquires depth, direction and weight. A narrow body supports a form that far exceeds it. A shift in viewpoint changes our understanding of the same animal: its display becomes a spatial construction made from numerous individual lines.
