A closer look at the work

Two pale funnels frame a ferry’s rear deck. Vehicles stand in ordered rows between them, their rectangular roofs repeating the ship’s technical divisions. Wet, dark surfaces reflect the light. Beyond them, the wake recedes towards the horizon beneath a heavy cloud front, while brighter areas of sky remain open on the right.

The work archive places the photograph on a Baltic crossing from Finland to Germany. The view looks backwards: the ship’s route survives as a temporary trace on the water. The cargo appears fixed in place while its surroundings change. Travel becomes an experience of stillness and movement occurring within the same pictorial space.
