A closer look at the work
The trunk stands so close that it divides the view of the lake. Its mottled bark and strong branches have a bodily weight, while the water behind it trembles in fine blue lines. Copper foliage almost closes off the upper part of the image. Small openings admit the sky; distance becomes visible below the canopy and on either side of the trunk. The diagonal edge of the shore connects these unequal spaces, giving direction to an otherwise frontal encounter.
The landscape emerges through a proximity that also obstructs it. The tree is neither a decorative frame nor a transparent foreground: it occupies a space of its own in relation to the viewer's body. The layered surface of its bark and the fleeting ripples suggest different measures of time. A small boat near the far shore introduces a human scale without commanding this quiet, slightly resistant presence.
