A closer look at the work

Viewed from behind, the peacock’s fan becomes an open construction. Pale feather shafts radiate from a turquoise centre, while dark spots interrupt the semicircle towards its edge. Beneath this large form, the body remains comparatively small. Pink foliage surrounds the bird, but the open ground allows its outline to stand out clearly.

The photograph presents the reverse of an appearance usually defined by its display side. Attention shifts from the decorative surface to its structure. Symmetry emerges from many slightly different lines; it remains apparent without becoming perfectly closed. By revealing the relationship between support and display, the image makes a supposedly familiar subject readable in another way.
