A closer look at the work

A street lamp and the Victory Column rise side by side into a dark blue sky. Its proximity to the camera gives the lamp a scale that competes with the monument. Its dark body answers the pale pink column, while light gathers around the winged figure above. A narrow band of pink treetops joins the two verticals at the lower edge. The largely empty sky sharpens their juxtaposition.

Photographic perspective rearranges an everyday hierarchy. A functional street object acquires almost the same pictorial authority as the elevated monument. Size becomes a relationship to the viewer's position rather than simply a property of a structure. The brilliant white of the figure is equally ambiguous: it attracts attention while withholding detail. The image opens a consideration of how public symbols command our attention, and how much their effect depends on light, distance and the direction of our gaze.
