The Infrared Journey — Somewhere in Between
Refugee Camp at Tempelhof Airport, Berlin
A closer look at the work
A fence runs across the foreground. Low turquoise buildings stand behind it; a slender tower with a spherical top rises above the layered roofs. Most of the frame is occupied by a sky of blue and pink clouds. Their soft transitions meet the regular grids and rectangles on the ground. Bicycles and objects left outside introduce small, concrete traces of daily life into this strict arrangement.
The title identifies a refugee accommodation site, directing attention towards the visible boundaries. The fence becomes a threshold between the viewer's position and a lived space whose interior perspective the photograph cannot provide. Luminous colours invite us into the image without explaining the social circumstances behind it. This tension calls for close attention to spatial divisions and everyday presence, as well as to everything an exterior view must leave open about individual lives.
