The Infrared Journey — Somewhere in Between
Signal of the Self
A closer look at the work
A traffic mirror hangs at an angle, containing a second view: between red foliage and dark ground, a person appears with a camera held in front of their face. Outside the mirror, plants, a post and wires continue against a turquoise sky. The patterned frame clearly separates the two spaces, while their shared colours reconnect them. The mirror shows both a fragment of the surroundings and the body from which the photographic gaze originates.
This self-image takes an indirect route. The person appears as a small figure within an already framed world; the face remains hidden behind the instrument of seeing. A mirror normally used to extend visibility makes the observer's own position an object of attention. Inside and outside resist a simple opposition: what appears within the mirror lies beyond its frame. The photograph holds these nested spaces together, suggesting that self-perception also requires a position and a mediating image.
