The Infrared Journey — Somewhere in Between
Cologne Cathedral Under a Changed Sky
A closer look at the work
The city occupies a narrow band between an expansive sky and dark water. The cathedral's twin spires rise on the left, answered by the low curve of the bridge on the right. Bright red foliage draws an almost continuous line along the shore. Boats and construction cranes add horizontal and delicate linear forms. Despite the portrait format, the urban scene unfolds across the picture; the large blue expanses give it distance.
The familiar landmark remains recognisable but no longer fills the field of vision. Its position emerges within a larger relationship between river, sky and built shoreline. Intense colour directs attention towards trees that might otherwise serve as architectural accompaniment. In the water, the dark reflection of the towers breaks into small movements. A clearly legible silhouette meets a second, unstable appearance: a cityscape also consists of what light and surface continually transform.
