Dettifoss, Island

A closer look at the work

Broad bands of pale water cross the rock edge and disappear into spray on the right. The current resembles soft folds, while the dark stone retains its angular structure. A low horizon and heavy clouds frame the waterfall. The panorama stresses its width as well as its sudden descent.

The image brings together two kinds of form: rock establishes boundaries and water continually redraws them. The softness of the flowing surface makes movement almost tangible. Their contrast suggests a landscape shaped by resistance and ongoing change.
