The Dimensions of Self – Why True Art Comes from Self-Realization
Art Philosophy and Perception Written by André WagnerAn Essay on Inner Diversity, Spiritual Depth and Surface Limits
In a world where the visible is often the measure of all things, the invisible is often left untouched – and yet it is precisely where true art begins. Art is more than expression. It is the mirror of our inner worlds, and these worlds – as diverse as they are – remain closed if we do not begin to know ourselves.
Self-realisation It's not an ego journey, it's not a pride in an artificially created image, it's the silent necessity to enter into a real dialogue at all -- whether it's with a person or with the canvas, the photograph, the form. Only those who have perceived themselves can express themselves in the depths, otherwise we'll stay on the surface: the form, the body, the pure exterior.
If we think we're just this body, our art is reduced to exteriors, and then we create images that appeal but don't touch, works that shine but don't whisper, and an art of attachment, not liberation, emerges.
Just as we often get annoyed when someone scratches our car -- because we feel it's part of our identity -- so do we respond to criticism of our art when we've created it not out of inner freedom, but out of self-imprisonment, but art is not an insured property, it's a gift -- a released piece of soul.
The external appearance, whether it be body or artistic technique, is only the first dimension, and beyond that is the spiritual plane, which is manifested in our love of silence, of literature, of music, of everything that does not need form to exist, and if we cultivate that dimension within ourselves, then our work becomes a vessel for spirit and diversity, and then every shot, every image, every composition is a window to another reality.
The body has few ways of expressing itself. The emotion is more varied but fleeting. The idea, the thought, the vision — they linger. A well-formed thought carries on for decades. An image born of such a thought speaks for generations. It's culture.
Culture is nothing more than the matured fruit of a trained intellect - a mind that has explored itself and is now able to resonate with others. Art that emerges from this inner culture has depth. It remains. It transforms.
But many of them stay on that threshold, and they roam the depth without diving into it, and they create without inner reference, and they show without penetrating.
Maybe that's our job as artists: not just to show, but to reveal, not just to design, but to transform, not just to deliver an image, but to trigger an inner movement.
Because the invisible – that is what remains.
