Artistic Photography on Sylt: Visible and Invisible

Artistic Photography on Sylt – Between the Visible and the Invisible

Works, Exhibitions & Projects Written by André Wagner

Artistic photography It's not just a technical process for mapping the world. Medium of TransformationSince the beginning of the Pictorialism In the late 19th century, photography by artists such as Alfred Stieglitz’, Edward Weston or Imogen Cunningham understood as a form of expression – as a possibility to deconstruct and retell the visible world.

I continue this tradition in my own visual language – through a photographic gaze that depicts not so much the visible as the visible. Between makes the theme: that floating between moment and meaning, nature and interior, surface and feeling.

Sylt in infrared – An island becomes the carrier of inner images

For my series The Infrared Journey – Somewhere in Between I have the North German island Sylt What at first seems like classical landscape photography is transformed into a new reality under the influence of this particular frequency of light:

The Vegetation lights up in almost ethereal tones,
The The sky becomes dark and heavy,
The landscape loses its familiarity and becomes the mirror of inner states.

There is a silent magic in infrared photography. Nature as we know it seems raptured -- transformed into something symbolic. Sylt became for me a place of transition: between ebb and flow, between the feast and the fugitive.

A work that transforms spaces

The works in this series are deliberately not loud. They're not screaming, they're whispering.
They are: Visual Poems, which penetrate spaces with a silent force – not as a decoration, but as an impulse for new perspectives.

Every work is Strictly limited, Signed and only available in a few copies – created for people with an eye for the essentials.

A special connection to Sylt was already established in 2023: For the Severin*s Resort & Spa in Keitum, several large-scale works from my Birkenwald series were purchased and integrated into the redesigned restaurant TIPKEN’S by Nils Henkel. The photographs became part of the spatial concept at the time and accompanied the reorientation of the restaurant – a combination of photographic art, architecture and cuisine.

Severin*s himself described the collaboration for the opening of the new restaurant concept by saying that the TIPKEN’S has not only received a new look, but also a new concept through my photographic works.

In the meantime, the art presentation at TIPKEN’S has been re-curated. The purchase and integration of my works at that time remains an example of how photographic art can become part of the identity of a special place over several years.

A work for people with deep vision

This series is part of an ongoing artistic journey.
It leads through places where the surface dissolves – to a depth that cannot be described with words.

Sylt It was not a goal, but a mirror.
A place where the sea does not separate, but connects.
A place where light and shadow enter into an inner dialogue.

Where the outside is silent, the inside begins to speak.
