How my picture frames are made – a candid look behind the scenes
Photographic art and collecting Written by André Wagner
Each of my works of art needs the right presentation that makes my subject work optimally. For me, a frame has to work aesthetically and technically perfectly and also perform a certain function depending on the work of art. Since there is no standard presentation for me and I have my photographs framed in very different ways, I decide together with Andreas Neumann in an individual conversation which is the best presentation for the picture and taking into account where the picture will hang later.

It is also very important to think about what dangers or influences an image can be exposed to.
One danger, for example, could be the risk that a child might come into direct contact with the picture, which could be simple touches or even a drawing, and if that's the case, you can't get around a glazing around it.
These 3 types of glass are available: regular glass, museum glass and Plexiglas.
Normal glassIt's very reflective, it's cheaper, and it comes in many sizes, the UV protection must be checked for the specific glazing.
TIP: If possible, do not hang a picture framed with regular glass opposite a window because of the reflection, do not hang in direct sunlight, otherwise the colors can change over the years on the print. With spot lighting, the reflection can be greatly reduced.
Museum glass is anti-reflective, costs many times more than the regular glass and it is very heavy, with UV protection depending on the chosen product. The artwork comes across optimally and very brilliantly through the few - almost no reflections.
TIP: A work of art framed with museum glass can also be hung opposite a window, you should transport it never lying down and always with sufficiently padded packaging.
Plexiglass UV protection, scratch resistance and available sizes depend on the specific product.
TIP: Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions when cleaning. Unsuitable cleaning products can damage the material.
Through this documentation at my Bilderrahmer in Berlin I was able to get an even deeper insight into the world of picture frames.
I do not think that you have to bring everything yourself, but it is very helpful to be very familiar with the subject matter that you have to deal with on a daily basis, so that I am able to optimally adapt the variety of presentation possibilities to the requirements.
