Reflections of India
Benares cow, Indien
2008
Artwork and cultural context
An image within the street image
A face remains out of focus in the foreground, while a cow appears behind within a red area bordered by lettering. Reflection, transparency and framing cannot be reduced to a single viewpoint. The photograph works with layers of seeing rather than a neatly enclosed street scene.
Varanasi has a long religious and cultural history on the Ganges. Here the city is encountered through a shopfront, lettering and optical overlap. The framing shows how a historic place can also become visible in its everyday surfaces.
