Reflections of India
Benares - sleeping gods, Indien
A closer look at the work
A pale temple tower rises against a deep blue sky. On the left, the broad green facade answers it with an adorned image of a deity in a niche. Between and below them are steps, vessels, fabrics and human figures; a blue railing crosses the foreground diagonally. The light defines the architecture clearly, while some of the bodies take on softer contours. The scene draws its tension from this coexistence of legible structure and less easily grasped movement.
Benares – sleeping gods directs the eye from the rising tower to the people on the ground. Sacred imagery and everyday objects are not separated here; they belong to the same densely composed space. The title suggests sleep and rest, while the photograph leaves open what each person is doing. What kind of attention emerges when we look beyond the architecture to the unobtrusive objects and gestures at its feet?
