Urban · Visions of Time
Berliner dom, Deutschland
2011
A closer look at the work
A stone figure stands on a high pedestal at Berlin Cathedral on the right. Its arm and a slender object point into the broad blue sky. The illuminated city opens below while the nearby façade closes the right edge. Greenish light distinguishes the sculpture’s bodily detail from distant buildings.
The vertical format shifts attention from urban overview to the relationship between figure and sky. Looking follows the raised gesture before returning to the depth below the pedestal. Sculpture becomes part of a frame shaping the outlook. A familiar city is perceived through a nearby architectural detail whose scale and direction alter the entire view.
