Reflections of India
Child in Varshana, Uttar Pradesh
Artwork and cultural context
Closeness and depth within a lane
A child sits close to the left edge against a pink wall. Behind, a lane leads towards other, less sharply defined people. The short distance to the child and the layered background connect an intimate portrait with the spatial course of a street.
Varshana, now usually written Barsana, lies in the Braj region. The photograph approaches the pilgrimage town through an inhabited lane. Between the child in the foreground and distant figures, it moves from personal encounter to public space.
