A closer look at the work
Two women emerge clearly from grey mist, while another figure remains faint behind them. Yellow patterned and red cloth create bright areas around their bodies. Feet and a narrow strip of ground anchor the almost placeless setting. Faces remain partly covered; the direction of their steps is clearer than the surroundings.
The title identifies a return from the Yamuna River. The photograph presents this route as a gradual becoming visible: proximity brings contour and colour, while distance dissolves both. The women appear neither as mere signs of tradition nor as bearers of plainly readable feelings. Different postures preserve individuality within a shared movement through the same misty space.
